My Grandmother died this weekend but I don’t particularly want to get sentimental, or worse morbid. What I would like to do is share something that she made a few years ago and which I finally got around to photographing this summer. She spent a lot of her time crocheting, knitting or doing embroidery and the things she made are beautiful. She was really creative and actually very talented, although she never would have thought of herself as so. One of my favourite things she ever made is a cushion cover embroidered with all different beetles and bugs, I will have to show you it all someday. This is the blanket that she crocheted which is frankly HUGE.
It’s made up entirely of the appropriately named Granny squares in a selection of different wools and colours. It’s actually quite mental to think of the amount of time that went into making it, I don’t know if I’d ever have the patience to complete something so big!
There’s something beautiful and very special about how the things you make can remain after you’ve gone. When I look at this blanket I’ll always think of my Gran’s beautiful, clever and creative hands making it. Maybe one day someone will remember me in the same way through the things I’ve made.
Almost managed to uphold my promise of non-sentimentality!
I hope you’ve all had lovely weekends.
