When I saw the Keepsake Boards in the Liberty Book of Home Sewing I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist giving them a go at some point! I used to have pin boards when I was little and loved pinning various cards, photos and other bits and pieces to them. I wanted a couple of boards now to use as inspiration boards for my upcoming wedding party and I’m hoping to use them to keep track of ideas, like a mood board. They were so easy to make and I think they’re going to work perfectly!
If you’d like to create your own keepsake board, here’s how…
You will need: A wooden board, wadding, fabric to cover the board with, Liberty tana lawn fabric for the strips, a staple gun and some drawing pins.
To start with I found an old wooden shelf which I sawed in half to create two rectangular boards. You can use a variety of boards for this project however, you could cover up an existing pin board or just use a plank of wood!
I then cut out a piece of wadding big enough to cover the board and stapled it onto the back. I then cut out a piece larger than this of the covering fabric and again stapled it onto the back, overlapping the wadding. I chose to create a neat finish by folding the edges but this doesn’t really matter.
I then cut out 3cm wide strips of Liberty tana lawn fabric and ironed the edges in – resulting in strips of about 1.5cm wide. I chose to use just one Liberty print for the strips on each board but you could use a few, or even back the board with a Liberty print and use plain strips. I crossed the strips diagonally across the board and stapled them onto the back, threading each one in and out to create a criss-cross effect. I didn’t use anything to ensure my lines were perfectly straight but you may need to depending on the size of your board and how perfect you want it to look!
Finally, at each point where two strips crossed over I hammered in a drawing pin. Your board should now be complete and ready to fill with whatever you choose!
I put a couple of engagement cards on mine for now but I am planning on filling it with wedding ideas. I’m excited to start collecting party ideas and creating a more fixed idea of how everything will look soon and I’m hoping these boards will help! I’ll keep you updated of how the boards progress on my instagram @rozbazscoz so follow me on there if you’d like to see!
We’d also love to see anything YOU make on instagram (boards or otherwise), tag your creations #newcraftsociety and we’ll have a look!
