‘Make Do and Mend’ – Liberty Shirt Dress

Last month I bought a huge, old Liberty shirt dress in a charity shop in Winchester and have been wondering what to do with it ever since. It came down to my ankles and swamped me in every direction, I had no idea how I could alter it to fit or make any garment I would actually wear but last week I had an idea. I decided to cut it in half and make a skirt out of the bottom and a shirt out of the top!

I literally cut a straight line through the middle of the dress to separate the two pieces. For the skirt I made an elasticated waistband and for the shirt I hemmed the bottom. That is absolutely all the sewing I did and I think the two finished garments have turned out perfectly! The print is ‘Hera’ which is one of Liberty’s classics; I think H has some in pink at the moment which is beautiful. This is how the dress looked to start with…

The shirt was still too big for me but it looks really good on Aaron so he’s been donated it on the condition that he promises not to wear it when I wear the skirt. I think we’d look like some strange version of The Kooples if we wore them at the same time…

Do you have any success stories of garments you’ve altered? I’m going to keep my eyes peeled for another ‘make do and mend’ project!
