Self-Drafted Silk Skirt

I am so unbelievably happy with how this turned out! It was my first time using the skirt block I made up in my course at Ray Stitch and demonstrates perfectly how much better a custom fit looks and feels. I wouldn’t ever think I would wear a skirt this length, but love this one so much! It fits like a dream, feels so nice and makes me feel GREAT.

The waist band could have been better and a little bit longer and I’m not quite sure why I massacred the top of the zip off like that, but otherwise it’s a French seamed, fitted beauty! Luckily I didn’t need a slit up the back and can walk in this fine. I didn’t taper in at all in the length so if you do on any self-drafted skirt, I’d be prepared to add a small slit up the back.

The fabric is silk that we scooped up at the House of Hackney sample sale a couple of months ago. We have a whole roll, so expect to see me in this print a fair bit. I already have plans for a drop waist dress, kimono, shirt and a fitted dress….

I wore this out to Rosie’s birthday dinner last weekend, with a quickly tacked up hem cause it wasn’t quite done on time. My machine keeps playing up and jamming (snapping the top thread) which is slowing me down now. It is incredibly frustrating, I’m hoping it just needs a good clean of lint and then will run smoothly again. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated! Otherwise I might launch it out of the window.

Hi. Lovely ideas! Re your sewing machine; double check your needle is inserted correctly. If it’s not that, then I hope it’s something simple and nothing terminal!

It was the bobbin!! It was a non-Janome one and was wobbling around a bit too much I think. Swapped it over and it is sewing wonderfully again!
