I’d had my eye on this pattern for ages before I got round to buying it. I like the ’90s grunge’ vibe of it and find myself picking dresses just like it out at vintage shops all the time. When The Fabric Store offered to send us some fabric and I saw this gorgeous ‘Honey Bee’ rayon crepe the stars all kind of aligned and I figured this was the perfect time to sew my first Sabrina. Granted, the fabric doesn’t give it a very grunge vibe at all, it’s more summer tea party but I love it all the same!
In an ideal world I’d be wearing this with a white t-shirt and bare legs the sun would be shining and everything would be beautiful but it’s England in Winter and I’d rather wear it like this than not wear it at all. You gotta do what you gotta do.
I was worried it might come out really fitted which isn’t what I wanted (when will I commit to making a toile?) so I reduced the seam allowances slightly all the way around. I think I did them about 1.2cm instead of 1.5cm. I hadn’t really thought ahead though and it meant that my facing ended up too short so I had to stitch a little extra length onto it at the last minute.
The rouleau straps are really fun to make and much less difficult than I anticipated. I think they twisted a little so they aren’t perfect but perfect enough!
All of the buttons took quite a while to sew on but I hate putting zips in so actually really love the neat finish they give.
I’m 5’5″ and shortened the dress by 2 inches to achieve this above-the-knee length.
The fabric I used is a rayon crepe from The Fabric Store in New Zealand. They have the most amazing fabrics on their site and there’s free shipping for any orders over $150. They have a couple of stores outside of New Zealand too and when we were in LA recently we visited the one there. We LOVED it, the fabric is curated so well and the actual store is beautiful. We’re both obsessed with looking at all the clothes the girls who work there make on instagram, find them on The Fabric Store’s insta! We’re hoping The Fabric Store have plans for a London store soon… please?!
The crepe has a lovely drape and the print is super cute with flowers and bees peppering the fabric. I’ve got some left over so any ideas of good patterns for it?
*Fabric gifted by The Fabric Store but opinions of how great it is are entirely my own and true!
