CLASS OVERVIEW

In this four day course you will learn how to draft and sew your own bespoke skirt. Level up your sewing skills and learn the skills used by couture tailors. During the class you will draft your skirt, complete with waistband and centre back zip and make it up to a first baste (a wearable toile) draft and toile your skirt, sampling a variety of couture stitches as you go! This advanced workshop will help you to take your sewing projects to the next level!

WHAT WILL THIS CLASS COVER?

+ How to draft a pattern from your own measurements
+ How to strike a pattern onto fabric using bespoke methods
+ How to edit your pattern to make style decisions, such as length (mini, midi, maxi) and share (fitted, A-line, flared)
+ Learn what an inlay is and how this can make your garment more alterable
+ How to use bespoke methods to create a lining
+ How to sew a fully lined skirt with a hand finished waistband
+ How to insert an invisible zip
+ How to hand sew a button hole on a waistband
+ How to hand finish garments with couture techniques including: fell stitch, cross stitch and blind hem stitch
+ How to add an optional inseam pocket into the waistband (small, but big enough for a bank card!)

This is a practical class and you will create a bespoke pattern and toile of your skirt. There will be some hand sewing outside of the class, we’ll go through all of these techniques before you complete the finishing touches at home!

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

This class is suitable for advanced sewists. This is a fast paced class, covering a range of techniques, so you may need to complete some hand sewing at home in the evenings of the course. You need to be confident in making alterations to patterns and inserting a zip. You will finish the workshop with a range of advanced tailoring techniques that will level up your sewing skills!

CLASS INCLUDES:

+ Use of our Pfaff Ambition 635 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ Instructions to take home with you
+ Hands on help to create your pattern pieces
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

+ Fabric for toiling and matching thread for your skirt. For the main skirt fabric we recommend a medium weight, we’d suggest a wool suiting or jacquard, but you can also use a cotton/linen. You will also need a lining fabric. The amounts for both will depend on the style of skirt you want to make ((more for a maxiaround1.5-2m for a maxi skirt, less for a mini around 1m for a mini!). If you want guidance on the amount of fabric you will need, you can send us your rough measurements and usual dress size and we’ll be happy to advise. You will also need some haberdashery (a button, zip and silk buttonhole thread) and specialist fabrics (silesia and waistband fabric), we will send out a full list before the class.
