PROJECT

Learn to sew your own classic shirt with the one and only Heather from Closet Core Patterns! During this weekend course you will make your own classic shirt using the Jenna Shirt pattern from Closet Core Patterns. This is a timeless design with classic features including a traditional collar and stand, a classic tower placket and cuff, and a deep back yoke. This oversized shirt will be perfect for summer layering or wearing into the office - and who better to learn from than Heather herself, founder of Closet Core Patterns, who’s been producing some of our favourite patterns since 2013! You’ll leave the weekend with a new shirt and all the skills you need to level up your sewing skills.

WHAT WILL THIS COURSE COVER?

+ How to take your measurements and pick the right size

+ How to adapt and fit your pattern

+ How to layout stripes or prints for the best placement on your shirt

+ How to construct a professional collar, including tricks to get the perfect sharp point!

+ How to make and attach a shirt pocket

+ How to insert a perfect sleeve

+ How to sew a tower cuff placket (and what a cuff placket is!)

+ How to give your shirt a professional finish, including topstitching and hems

+ How to sew the perfect buttonholes and buttons

This is a practical class and you will leave with a new shirt!

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

This class is suitable for improvers and intermediate sewists. You need to know how to use a sewing machine and be comfortable with skills for basic garment construction.

CLASS INCLUDES:

+ Use of our Pfaff Ambition 635 sewing machines and Pfaff Admire 1000 overlockers in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.

+ All tools and equipment

+ A copy of the Jenna shirt and instructions

+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

+ Light to mid weight woven or shirting fabric. You can use a crisp structure woven like a poplin or lawn for a more formal shirt, or a linen, flannel or even a viscose to give your shirt a more drapey, informal look. If you are more of a beginner sewist, we’d recommend using a crisper cotton for this class. Fabric requirements will range from 1.6-3.6m depending on if you make the long or cropped version, your shirt size and fabric width. Check out the Jenna pattern for more information.
+ 0.5m of fusible interfacing
+ 10-12, 13-15mm wide shirt buttons depending on if you choose the full or cropped shirt
+ Matching thread
