CLASS OVERVIEW

To help celebrate the launch of Lauren's brand new book we're hosting her for a very special course to learn to make one of the projects from the book. Join us over the course of three evenings to make your own patchwork jacket! There is nothing cozier than a patchwork jacket for warm summer nights. The new pattern by Lauren Macdonald (@working_cloth on Instagram) is a beautiful patchwork design and the opportunities to mix and match colours, patterns and fabrics are endless! Each week Lauren will cover the techniques for assembling your pieces and final jacket, with some homework to complete between each class. At the end of three sessions, you will have your own, totally unique patchwork jacket! Every student will also receive a copy of the book, full of other inspiring patchwork projects.

WHAT WILL THIS COURSE COVER?

+ How to pick the right fabric for your patchwork

+ How to adapt the size of the jacket using extra rows of patchworking

+ How to cut and prepare fabric for patchwork

+ How to sew patchwork together for a neat finish

+ How to piece patchwork together to create your jacket

+ How to appliqué by hand

+ How to hand quilt your pieces

+ How to finish quilted garments

These are practical classes and you will leave with your own jacket!

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?

This class is suitable for confident beginners and intermediate sewists. You need to know how to use a sewing machine and feel comfortable with skills like inserting a sleeve!

This class will use the jacket pattern from Lauren’s new book. In the class, Lauren will help you to adapt the pattern to your size.

CLASS INCLUDES:

+ Use of our PFAFF Ambition 635 sewing machines in the classes. If you'd like to learn on your own machine then please do bring it along - please let us know the model in advance and bring your manual with you.
+ All tools and equipment
+ A copy of Lauren's new book Piece by Piece: 20 Modern Patchwork and Quilting Projects to Make From Preloved Fabrics
+ Drinks and sweet treats to keep you going throughout the class.

STUDENTS NEED TO BRING:

+ Fabric. You will need a variety of different fabrics for this project, depending on which design you select and the size you make. These will range from approx. 0.9m to 1.6m of fabric. This pattern works best with a stable fabric, like a quilting cotton. Exact fabric requirements will be sent out ahead of the class.

+ 3.2m of lining fabric.

+ Approx 3.2 x 1.2m of wadding.

+ 3.5m of 5 cm bias binding for binding the outside of the jacket. There is also an option to bind the internal seams, which requires 13.5m of 1.2cm wide binding.

+ Matching regular thread for piecing your fabric together.

+ 3 x 40m skeins of sashiko thread or 2 x 80m spools of Perle 8 cotton thread for quilting the jacket.
